Sharon Knowles has been playing the clarsach, the Celtic Harp, for over twenty years. Venues have included festivals all over Scotland and in the Republic of Ireland. Sharon has also performed in Western Australia. She moved to the United States in July 1997, with her American husband, John Knowles.  In 2000, Sharon and John recorded their first CD " Ferry Cottage".

The couple’s first home was in Eastern North Carolina where Sharon decided to study music theory and composition to better teach the harp. Sharon began her performance career almost immediately and, with John, played at several major events in North Carolina like the Festival of the Eno in Chapel Hill.

Sharon and John moved to Germantown, Maryland, in September 2000. Again, Sharon made quick progress in the Capitol area harp scene. She is the harp tutor for The House of Musical Traditions in Washington D.C., and is a sought-after solo performer in the area. Her performance history since moving to the D.C. suburbs, to name a few, has included the Washington DC Revels, The Library of Congress and The Supreme Court of the United States. Sharon is the director of the Washington Area Folk Harp Society Benefit Concert. Sharon performs with Sue Richards in the harp duo called HEN. HEN has performed in the USA and Europe including major festivals such as Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Scotland.

Sharon is also a member of the Scottish Traditional band Fynesound.

          Passing on the Tradition

Sharon is now sought after as a teacher of Celtic harp in the Washington DC area. She gives individual lessons and group classes  concentrating on the rhythm and ornamentation of Scottish and Irish music.

Sharon has taught at several major Summer Schools including the Ohio Scottish Arts School and Common Ground on the Hill.
